Sometime around the year 2045, there was a robot war. On one side, a race of sapient machines called the Omnics had their free will hijacked by the Omniums, a collections of superpowered AIs in charge of robot factories. On the other side, humanity. With endless reinforcements marching out of the Omniums, the war looked grim for humans. Victory was only snatched from the jaws of defeat by a crack team of the best agents the Earth had to offer, members of a newly formed organization called "Overwatch". After the Omnic Crisis ended, Overwatch stuck around as a global peace keeping force. Think the Avengers, but more official. Thirty years later, Overwatch was shut down after investigations revealed corruption among the organization's highest levels. The agents of Overwatch retired, started new ventures, or went into hiding.

Two particular agents of Overwatch were Torbjörn Lindholm and Reinhardt Wilhelm. Reinhardt was a German Crusader, which in the late 21st century referred to a particular brand of soldier that wore mighty power armor and fought on the front lines, deploying powerful energy shields to protect less heavily armored troops. Torbjörn was a Swedish mechanical engineer who specialized in weapon design and who designed most of Overwatch's armaments. The two of them were close friends. When Overwatch was shut down, Reinhardt refused to retire and decided to travel the world as a knight-errant, seeking out injustice to battle on his own. Torbjörn spent a lot of his time hunting down weapons he had designed that had ended up in dangerous hands.

Torbjörn also spent a lot of time with his family, as he was getting on in years. While he had many children and, eventually, grandchildren, only one of them shared his passion for mechanical engineering: his youngest child Brigitte. Brigitte grew up spending much of her free time in her father's workshop, picking up the trade from him. She heard endless stories of heroism and valor from Reinhardt, who was actually her godfather, whenever he came to visit.

When Reinhardt decided to go on his knight-errant quest, Brigitte, now an adult in her own right, decided to follow him as his "squire" and keep him out of trouble. Her main job was maintaining Reinhardt's crusader armor, which was not too hard as her father had designed it. But despite Reinhardt's indefatigable spirit, his body was getting old. Reinhardt's grip on reality at this point was...a little loose, and he sometimes had trouble telling what was real. Brigitte spent as much time maintaining his armor as she spent caring for his injuries or talking him out of getting himself killed.

Then the word came out that despite being disbanded, Overwatch agents were starting to get back together to fight against the rising chaos in the world that had grown in their absence. When Reinhardt heard about it, Brigitte tried to talk him out of it. Overwatch had forced him into retirement after he had given them the best years of his life. He didn't owe them anything.

Reinhardt didn't care. The call had been sent out, and he would always answer. Brigitte decided that if she was going to keep her father's friend from getting himself killed, she was going to have to stop standing on the sidelines. She trained under Reinhardt to learn how to fight properly, and built her OWN set of power armor and took to the field herself, hoping that if she could stop blows from landing in the first place, she wouldn't have to keep patching the old man back together.

PERSONALITY: Brigitte effectively had three parents. Ingrid (Her mother who, unfortunately, is largely an unknown due to being a noncombatant.), Torbjörn, and Reinhardt, and her personality shows influences of all of them. From her father she got her love of mechanisms and engineering, along with a stubborn streak a mile wide. From Reinhardt, she gained a bone deep moral compass that pointed dead towards acts of heroism in the face of evil and injustice. But there's also a sense of reasonable levelheadedness that could only have come from a woman willing to put up with Torbjörn's gruff exterior and moodiness, which I can only assume is the influence of Brigitte's mother. All three combined to make a woman who would chase after Reinhardt the legendary hero of Overwatch and do her level best to keep him from getting his dumb ass killed.

Brigitte loves engineering just like her father, but their interests are in different fields. While Torbjörn always focused on designing weapon systems, Brigitte always had more of an interest in defensive systems and armor. There's an image in her backstory of her as a child bolting armor to the family cat. Her abilities in the actual game reflect this (and I'm going to be turning to examples from the game a lot, as the moment to moment gameplay in Overwatch is almost as much what defines the characters as all the animated movies and comics.), with her offensive power being weak compared to most other playable characters, but made up for by her powerful abilities focused around protecting and armoring allies. She canonically made her power armor herself, and while it was clearly BASED on the crusader armor Reinhardt wears, it is also clearly its own unique creation and not just a copy.

Brigitte is ostensibly the level headed one of the Brigitte/Reinhardt duo, constantly trying to talk him out of getting in over his head, but when all is said and done, she was the one who asked to go with him. She chose to fight alongside him rather than give up and leave him to his own devices. Deep down underneath everything, she's just as devoted as he is to seeing justice brought to the dark corners of the Earth. She doesn't consider helping Reinhardt to be a duty or a chore, she considers it an honor. She looks up to Reinhardt and constantly asks him for advice.

Brigitte is also endlessly optimistic. In game dialog is an important source players have for figuring out characterization, and when your character respawns from death in Overwatch, they sometimes have a line they say that reflects this. Some growl insults at their incompetent teammates. Some swear revenge against their enemies. Brigitte's, on the other hand, are hopeful and cheery. She says things like "Nowhere to go but up!", "This is not the end of the world!" or other things in that vein. Though her life is busy, she does her best to enjoy herself when she can. She likes exercise and food especially.

Her relationship with her family is better than one might assume, given that she ran off. Torbjörn is on record as trusting Reinhardt to keep his daughter safe (Reinhardt is, in fact, Brigitte's godfather.), and generally supporting her decision despite being worried about her. The two of them seem to enjoy talking shop, as they're both engineers. Most of their in-game interactions have to do with asking each other for opinions or advice on their various projects. Her family is very important to her.

Less important to her is Overwatch. They were the heroes of the world for thirty years, striking out at injustice and saving the day! But in the end, they fell short of their lofty ambitions and Brigitte considers them ultimately a failure. She also holds them responsible for forcing Reinhardt into retirement, and while she is on friendly terms with many individual former Overwatch agents, she has little desire to join them now that they're trying to rebuild the team. The only reason she is willing to work with them is that despite her best efforts to talk him out of it, Reinhardt has insisted on answering the call, and Brigitte's distrust of the people who cast her godfather out is not quite as strong as her loyalty to him.

POWERS/ABILITIES: While Brigitte has no supernatural abilities, she is a skilled melee fighter and a mechanical engineer of some talent. Her power armor greatly enhances her abilities, but in theory anyone could wear it and get the same effects. She also has a flail.

Within the strict mechanics of the game, every time Brigitte strikes an enemy, she somehow causes all nearby allies to start slowly gaining health. I'm interpreting this as not some kind of magical healing effect or weird nanotech sprays or anything like that so much as Brigitte just having a naturally talent for leadership. She doesn't HEAL people in fights so much as just inspire them to keep on going despite their injuries until they can get proper medical care later. She does have a fair amount of first aid experience, though, from taking care of Reinhardt's aging and abused body.
